Mon, 02 Feb 2009 17:17:38 +0000https://news.wpblog.mst.edu/2009/01/campus_to_close_interdisciplin/#comment-68So, basically, the closure of the program won’t save the university any money (no faculty or staff member will lose his/her job), the building will still be used, and the IDE courses will continue tentatively until the last IDE student graduates or changes majors.
Why, then, is the program being closed?
Concerning the budget, there are no additional students entering the university by cutting the IDE degree. Students who chose to transfer are only moving their money elsewhere; there is no additional revenue to be made by doing away with the department.
It should also be noted that IDE began its trial run as a department during the 2005 academic year, not in 2004.
I am very disappointed with the Provost’s decision to close the department, as well as the manner in which situation was handled.
There was no forewarning given to either the students or the faculty of the IDE program. There was no indication that the program was under-performing, or that if enrollment rates were not increased, the program would be closed. Nor were any alternatives presented to students or faculty.
In short, the decision to close the Department of Interdisciplinary Engineering serves as no benefit to the university and borders on unjust for the many students and faculty who wish to see the program survive and continue to grow.
