The Society of the 3rd Infantry Division put up a monument in Berchtesgaden in 2008 honoring the 3rd ID for having taken Obersalzberg in 1945. Arthur Mitchell (University of South Carolina) published a detailed account of the 3rd ID’s capture of Berchtesgaden correcting Ambrose (Hitler’s Mountain: the Fuehrer, Obersalzberg and the American occupation of Berchtesgaden / Mc Farland 2007). German historian Florian Beierl was the first author to set the record straight in his 2005 book (Hitlers Berg / Plenk 2007 – unfortunately not out in English).
