When I was a sophomore or junior at Rolla in 1951-1952, there was a small fire in the upper story of the Bureau of Mines building. The Rolla fire department dispatched a pumper truck to extinguish the blaze, but at that time the height of the building was almost exactly the same as the town’s municipal water tower. Ladders were raised and firemen directed the hose toward the open window. BUT, the stream of water resembled a typical lawn watering in the summer. Fortunately, the fire was small enough to be overcome with hand-held fire extinguishers by the Fire Department. The whole episode amused us Miners that day.
