This brought back memories of a rather boring weekday evening during undergrad (early 80’s), but subsequently became eventful when three of us had our own paper airplane contest. Rules: Paper airplane had to be built from a 3×5 index card and nothing else, and to refrain from bias in terms of launching mechanism (i.e. whose arm was strongest), we used an electric typewriter (the kind in which each letter still had it’s own arm, but it was electrically motivated, not manually…remember those, kids?!) to launch the airplane. I believe it was the letter Y that launched the planes. Two hours of testing, trial runs, and final launching for the contest. Can’t remember who won, but a fun night resulted!

I watched the video with rapt attention and may just try to make one of my own.
My favorite anecdote about paper airplanes is that in 1977 I visited Fermilab outside of Chicago, home of the Tevatron accelerator. They have a beautiful office building there with sloping sides and a large enclosed space between the two sides. Its about 8 stories tall and each storey had a ledge facing inward. Guess what was “all over” those ledges? Paper airplanes. Guess the brightest minds in the world have time for a little levity. I have pictures. We were at Fermilab a month ago but could not get inside the building.
