The split should be into production of electricity and the other the transportation of electricity. The transportation company can be, probably has to be a monopoly. As of now, wires are absolutely required for the wholesale transportation of the commodity. The transport company will have to use a lot of hardware and computing power to balance our 3 phase system. Is 3 phase transport really required? I have absolutely no idea, but here in Phoenix, APS continuously wrestles with balancing the 3 phases because solar coming from thousands of sources must be balanced or the grid will collapse. Production will have to clean up their act to remain competitive with other producers and not get a reputation for pollution and be put out of business. Presumably, wind is being produced in 3 phases to begin with, but residential solar cannot do that without rewiring the entire residential grid.
