I’d much rather see a new grad have the ability to express design concepts and ideas using a plain old pencil and a piece of paper. It’s disturbing how many young design professionals do not have that ability. I know that such mundane things as being judged on your linework, arrowheads and lettering are things of the past (AutoCAD became the great “equalizer” in that respect) but it seems that the lack of focus on those basics has produced what I would consider an incomplete professional. If the graduate can’t take that paper and pencil and draw a reasonable facsimile of a construction detail, without the assistance of AutoCAD, MicroStation or REVIT, then I think that student is pursuing the wrong profession.
