I am retired now, but I went through MIT training in big data, and processing with MapD. Too much data to crunch with a CPU. Necessary to spread the work across multiple processors, therefore GPUs. Hello Nvidia maker of GPU boards as used in gaming technology. Seems the game people were leading edge.
Hadoop was first to have a commercial product although not the best solution requiring improvement.
So, I certified in Hadoop. Still not much opportunity for a contractor. Seems India based Hadoop had the market covered. I focused on adoption of Agile methodology for application development. Now, looks like AI has taken over that market. So, I retired. After 50 plus years with BS in math and MS in Computer Science from Rolla my best job was programming the Apollo Program lunar landing simulations in Fortran in 1969 and mission support at NASA in Houston for the lunar missions. I am still waiting for the younger generations to catch up.
